The Blog Squad

OK, I have to apologize upfront for this one! I should not even have to write this, but unfortunately, this one is for the 1% of the US population that has no other way of  "burning calories," as a friend of mine said, than to stir trouble on the internet.

I started this blog a little over a month ago and I can't complain.  It is doing very well.  I am a published children's author and I write, draw and take way too many photographs of other people's children.  Not a real big deal, but that is what I do.  I am not a Monet at drawing (obviously), but like to think I am comparable to Shakespeare or Dr. Suess when it comes to writing.

I get an unreal amount of emails a day and at least 10% of the emails say that I am "similar" to "Hyperbole and a Half" (another web comic), not in a negative way, just sayin'.  I did check out the site, LOVE it and yes, I see some slight similarities, but in the web comic/stick people world, there will be that.  And yes, I am flattered for the comparison because the site is freaking amazing, but there really is nothing to compare.  Then, out of the 10% that suggest that (which I don't mind), there is the 1% hate group that sends me "hate mail."

Really, anonymous people, you hate me? So because I write words and draw pictures (something I have been doing for 20 years) I am not original and ripping an entire site off? When none of our posts are even remotely close to being the same? And you have absolutely NOTHING else better going on in your life than to surf the net and compare web comics, judge them with your keen web comic judging skills and send your anonymous hate mail?

This really happened.  One person sent an email saying that my stick figures were AWFULLY similar to Hyperbole and a Half's stick figures.  Once again...really?  Are you serious? Stick figures that look similar? Do you know what stick figures are composed of? OK, I will try to demonstrate the components of stick figures and what we have to work with.

I could put the pieces together in a different way, I suppose and "be original."

Or this.
Oh, I could put the eyes on top of the head.  Yeah, that's original...
But in actuality, stick people kind of all look the same, like oompa loompas.
Actually, most stick figures do look similar, especially if they don't have clothing on and that just looks really sick.  My people have clothing.  Normally, I put pink on girl stick figures as a gesture just to make it easier because pink is associated with girls.  Not every one does.  I am very simple minded, so I do.

I am not the type of person who goes on other peoples blogs to judge or condemn them to a lifetime of fire and ashes.  If I don't have anything positive to say, I won't say anything.  I do try to leave positive comments on the blogs that I visit.  I want to be a part of the community.  There are actually people who like to do just the opposite! They feel like they are the blog squad.  They hate you and the blog you came writing in on.
Just a few comparisons of me and Allie (creator of Hyperbole and a Half):
  1.  I don't have a boyfriend to talk about (Don't want one...Happy!).  Allie does.
  2.  I have no dogs and two children.  Allie has two dogs and no children.
  3.  I live in Louisiana.  Allie lives...somewhere else.
  4.  I have never cursed in my life and never will on my blog.  Allie does and I don't care that
        she does. I just don't.
  5.  Admittedly, we both like sharks...but that is just a coincidence!
  6.  I am allergic to peanuts and bees.
  7.  We draw pictures.  We write words. We are both stealth.
  8.  I have no life.  Allie does.
  9.  We both run, but mine is more of a fast paced walk.  And that leads to number 10...
 10. We both have feet.

Well, to all of the wonderful people who send me wonderful emails and great comments, thank you for being a positive part of my life.  It is appreciated and I hope that my blog can be a positive part of your days.  To the haters, this isn't a competition or a battle.  Just a couple of blogs.  Nothing more than that.  And for the record, Allie knows all about my blog so please stop trying to make this your own personal vendetta against me for drawing a few pictures and writing a few sentences.  Life is too short to be angry over cartoons. And maybe, just maybe, this will be the new me...

But, probably not. submit to reddit

  1. Careful, you just gave your haters some more ammo...

Expect 'anonymous' to send you angry bees in the mail, slathered in peanut butter.

  2. lol loved this post! Great stuff! And you know, there's a whole other aspect to the hate mail - and that is that they even notice you in the first place... so there's something positive in it after all - although I'm sure they would be upset to have this pointed out. Love your blog... thanks for the laugh!

  3. There are people who have nothing better to do than bring other people down.

Having a blog showing my crafts invites bullies too because the odd thing might look a bit similar to something already in existence (for example the same species of flower used). I take my inspiration from nature on that account, just as you take your inspiration from life. Just so happens that we are sometimes making and taking the same observations and inspirations.

  4. The only comparison is the writings/drawing, but the content has nothing to do with one another. That's ridiculous. Take comfort in knowing that 99% of the people who write hate mail have something very wrong with themselves that they then lash out due to frustration with their own problems. But if you're getting hate mail, you must be doing something right.

  5. It is what it is... you're doing the right thing by not letting those hatters bug you too much. You've got a good thing going here!

  6. Aw, I kinda love hate mail. It means someone is spending a ton of energy on you. Which is flattering! Even in hate, there is love!

They spend so much time getting all emotional and worked up. Put so much energy into those little typing fingers to write you out a piece of their mind. And in one single click, with barely no energy at all you can simply hit "Delete". Personally I'd reply back with "Delete" and then delete it. Or publish them!

  7. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! If you are receiving hate mail, that means you are making an impact!!!! Consider it a compliment. Keep on being true to yourself and ROCK IT GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. You have been doing this for years, this is just a different blog! Wish you hadn't stopped the last one, it was so good! Some people are just really immature and judgemental. Their lives are conditioned on trying to bring others down instead of lifting them up. Great post, as always!!

  9. You're awesome and your blog's awesome, Tracie!

Some people are just stupid enough to think they are allowed to judge someone else's blog just because they feel like to. Ignore them, it's the best thing you could do.

  10. Hmmm...I am a brand new follower, so I can't comment on what hsd gone on other than to tell you I like your stick figures and wish you didn't have to read those nasty emails!
Stop by my blog when you get a minute. I hope I can give you a giggle or two when you are pestered by pesky email! (smiling)

    1. LOVE the stick figures! And frankly, I never really caught on to that other website that you mentioned (maybe it was the type of humor... meh).

Oh, for some reason I'm not getting a "comment" box so having to piggyback on Graze InAZ comment (sorry Grace).

Keep up the great work, Tracie!

  11. Awesome! So glad you found me so I could find you! I have only had a couple of haters but they criticized my writing, and made such horrible grammatical errors I had to laugh! I like to save them. The hate makes me stronger!

  12. I must not be doing something right. I have yet to receive hate mail. Maybe I need to get more controversial. I want someone to hate me.

  14. How something as negative as pseudo-hate/trolling can turn into a creative outlet is something the reader in me loves to see. Thanks for this, and I'll follow along!

  15. Um...I think your stick figures look like my mother in law....I am now your best friend :) like coffee? http://thecoffeeblogs.blogspot.com you have my permission to draw stick figures of people drinking coffee...(i have the rights)

  16. Isn't it silly the things that people will expend energy on... like hating? Personally, I don't get it. Vicious emails are such a waste of time, and do nothing for the sender, karma-wise. They'll get theirs, one day.

  17. YAY another doodle blogger! I love reading blogs in this genre!

P.S. When people criticize me for "trying to be Hyperbole and a Half," I just link them to this note. :)

  18. People don't realize it is just a style, like cowboy boots. Thanks for the note...that helps me a lot!

  19. Completely agree with Haven. And the fact that they have to write it as anonymous.... so irritating.
